Behind the Seams: An Interview with Designer Sassi Holford

Next in our featured designer series is Sassi Holford. Sassi is a Brittish fashion and bridal designer known for sophisticated style, clean lines, and incredible structure in her gowns. Sassi started designing at the age of 17 when she made a gown for a close friend, and little did she know, she had just designed and created her first of many wedding gowns.

After designing for almost 40 years, she has made gowns for 3 royal weddings, worked with countless celebrities, and made an incredibly well-regarded name for herself in the bridal industry. As best said on her website, "Sassi’s exquisite designs are sophisticated, elegant and contemporary – and her instinctive eye for detail results in the famous cut, incredible fit and effortless style that makes her label so unique."

Join us for a peek into the mind and life of designer, Sassi Holford!

How would you describe the Sassi Holford bride?

A Sassi Holford bride has inner confidence and a self-assured, understated style. She’s the career woman who knows what she wants!

What do you think will be the next big bridal trend and what is on the way out?

I think ballgowns will make a big comeback to re-celebrate at the big wedding parties after COVID. I don't think we can rule anything out because of so many different kinds of brides and weddings.

Do you have a favorite quote or affirmation you tell yourself?

I've got two: "If you can be anything, be kind," and “Fashion comes and goes but style stays forever."

Is there anything you wish brides knew before shopping?

Yes - bringing too many guests can confuse you. Do some research to decide what you're looking for, don't go in blindly.

If you could make a custom wedding dress for any celebrity, who would it be and why?

Emily Blunt--I love her persona and she's quite feisty; I won't give in until I get her! Anne Hathaway would be a close second.

If you know your enneagram number, what is it? Do you think this relates to your design style?

I've never taken the enneagram test but we have a similar one here in England that we took at the office. It said I'm an innovator and motivator, that I'm impatient, and that I have very little completer/finisher tendencies. (Our best guess? We think Sassi is a 4w3!)

What do you do to relax and escape the wedding world?

I don't feel I need to escape from it, but I love cooking, walking, and socializing with friends and family. I'm definitely a homebody.

How has COVID impacted you and your collection?

After COVID, I was rethinking how I design new collections, being slower and taking more time to think through the details. I embraced the experience and learned how I can improve. Pre-COVID I designed a lot of ballgowns for the collection, and post-COVID I've designed a lot of outdoorsy, versatile dresses that can be worn for lots of different kinds of weddings. For the future, I'm thinking beautiful, opulent gowns and ballgowns.

Do you have a favorite gown from the Asteria collection?

It's kind of like choosing a favorite child! I'd say Iris and Amber because of their sophistication, Sanda because it makes every girl look like a model, and Charlotte because it's just so sharp.

We are so excited to have Sassi Holford's trunk show here in the Charlotte showroom from November 1-14th. For more information and to book your appointment to try on her newest gowns, click HERE or scroll to the bottom of this page.
