Behind the Seams: An Interview with Designer Margo Lafontaine with Amsale

Next in our designer spotlight series is Margo Lafontaine--designer for the iconic bridal house Amsale. The late Amsale Aberra is widely credited as the inventor of the modern wedding dress, and Margo has done a phenomenal job of continuing her legacy. From their website, "With an understated glamour, and unwavering attention to detail, each and every Amsale design exudes modern femininity, and becomes a true reflection of the wearer’s distinct, and unique, personal style. Our philosophy today honors Amsale’s lifelong pursuit of enduring style that evokes feeling and connection—an indelible legacy that is felt in every design."

How do you plan to continue Amsale's legacy with your future collections?

She left such an incredible brand and ethos. I definitely want to continue celebrating a brides inner beauty and not distracting or detracting from her. It is my honor and privilege to continue her legacy.

What do you think is the next big bridal trend and what is out?

Girls are definitely wanting to dress up a little bit more these days in a grander way. They want more detail, something more special for their special event. I'm seeing a lot of gowns that are clean with a twist. On the other hand, gowns with heavy beading and lace are out, girls want to be comfortable!

Do you have a favorite quote or affirmation you tell yourself?

"If it's something worth doing, its worth doing well."

Is there anything you wish brides knew before shopping?

Keep an open mind and try different styles, you might be surprised!

If you could make a custom wedding gown for one celebrity who would it be and why?

Serena Williams--she's such an iconic and incredible person as both a woman and athlete. I would design a dress to celebrate her.

What do you do to relax and escape the wedding world?

I have a 2.5 year old daughter named Hazel. We play ring around the rosie and with playdough and draw with sidewalk chalk. I've been thankful for the time that COVID has allowed me to spend with her.
